Getting accurate numbers

· Log every fill-up. Skipped fill-ups make MPG look better than reality — partial fills still count.
· Use a consistent label per vehicle. MPG is computed per vehicle label, so "Van 12" and "van 12" are treated as the same vehicle but "Van-12" is not.
· MPG needs two odometer readings. It's the miles between two fill-ups divided by the second fill-up's gallons — one reading can't produce MPG.
· Watch the trend, not one fill. A sudden MPG drop on one vehicle is often your first maintenance warning.
