The Yard Space Problem Nobody Fixed: Parking, Staging, and the Last Mile of Fleet Logistics
Ask any OTR driver where they parked last Tuesday and you will hear the same story: circling a full truck stop at 9pm, a paid spot if they were lucky, or a shoulder they did not love. Industry surveys have put the ratio at roughly one legal parking space for every eleven trucks on the road — and that is before you count trailer storage between contracts, drop yards for relay runs, or a dock for two hours of repalletizing.
The space problem is bigger than parking
Secure overnight parking is the visible part. Underneath it is a whole market that still runs on phone calls and who-you-know: yards that hold spare trailers, fenced lots for equipment between jobs, container and chassis storage near ports, and cross-dock space rented by the hour. None of it has a directory. Fleets find it through dispatcher networks, driver gossip, and Craigslist posts that may or may not be real.
What it costs when it goes wrong
- Drivers burning legal clock hunting for parking — the FMCSA allows it as off-duty time only if they actually stop
- Parking tickets and tow-away fines in metros that actively ticket trucks
- Cargo and equipment theft from unsecured or improvised lots
- Trailers stranded mid-contract because nobody knew a yard two exits away had space
What we are exploring
We think the fix looks like a directory, not a broker: facilities — yards, terminals, industrial lots, private landowners — list their space, and fleets search it from the same app they already use to dispatch. Facilities stay in charge of their own pricing and rules; we would provide the discovery layer and, eventually, the availability and gate-code tooling to run it.
Before we build anything, we want to know if this is a real problem for you or just a loud one online. Five questions, answered honestly:
- Do you pay for secure truck or trailer parking today? How much, and in which metro?
- Do you keep trailers or equipment in a yard between jobs? How did you find it — and is it reliable?
- Have you ever needed short-notice dock or staging space (a few hours to a few days)?
- If you own or manage a facility with unused fenced space — would you list it?
- What would make you actually trust a stranger's lot with a $60k trailer?
Tell us through the contact page — even a one-line answer shapes what we build first. If the answer is "fleets already have their yards sorted," that is a useful answer too and we will spend the time on something else.
PRIME is fleet software — dispatch, tracking, time-clock, invoicing — free for small fleets while you evaluate it. Storage discovery would live on the same platform, not a separate thing to buy.
