Fleet Apps on CarPlay & Android Auto: What Works Today and What's Next

Every driver already runs one second screen β€” the head unit. The question for fleet software isn't whether to be on it, it's what actually belongs there. A dispatch board doesn't belong on a car display; a spoken job alert does. Here's where each platform actually stands for a working fleet.

What works today

  • Notifications mirror automatically β€” a job offer or a status change on your phone surfaces on the car display through both Android Auto and CarPlay's notification handling, no extra setup
  • Voice assistants route through β€” 'Hey Siri, send a message' and Google's assistant handle dictated replies hands-free
  • Audio briefings work now β€” our spoken morning briefings and read-back confirmations play through the car stereo like any other audio
  • Navigation hands off cleanly β€” a job's pickup address in the driver app hands off to Maps/Google Maps with one tap, and the turn-by-turn takes over the car screen

The honest state of 'native' CarPlay/Android Auto

A fleet app appearing as its own tile on CarPlay or a native Android Auto app isn't a toggle β€” it's a gated path on both platforms. Apple requires a CarPlay entitlement granted per app category (they approve driving-task, navigation, communication, and a handful of others β€” a dispatch app fits 'driving task' only when it does something genuinely useful while driving). Android requires the app to declare car categories and, for anything beyond notifications, a car-specific service. We've wired the Android declaration β€” our notifications surface on Auto head units today β€” and the CarPlay entitlement request is the specific next step for full integration.

Why this matters more than it sounds

For a driver, every interaction the app handles hands-free is one less glance off the road β€” and glance time is literally the metric distracted-driving litigation measures. Fleets with documented hands-free tooling have a demonstrable safety posture, which increasingly matters to insurers and to the brokers who audit you. 'Our drivers never need to touch the phone' is a compliance claim, not a convenience claim.

Our apps already do the phone-side of hands-free: spoken job briefs, voice confirmations, and notifications that mirror to the car. Native CarPlay templates and Android Auto messaging surfaces are on the near-term roadmap β€” the entitlement and native build work is where the effort actually lives.
